Gender Neutral Signage helps to play a role in building a more accepting culture that acknowledges our diversity in public spaces. Inclusivity and understanding are essential building blocks for creating this culture.
The growing demand for signage that doesn’t discriminate will only increase in the coming years.
With that in mind, companies have implemented inclusivity onto their signage in the following ways:
- By Adding Gender Neutrality, that doesn’t enforce gender binaries to their signs.
For Example: While the adult pictogram depicting a half female, half-male figure appears in many gender-neutral signs, this pictogram is unclear and could trigger, as it implies a gender stereotype. Other well-intentioned signs, like those using a gender-neutral symbol can also be confusing. Instead, we recommend using other ADA-compliant signage that uses an image of a toilet in lieu of gendered pictograms.
See below:
2. Another way Companies are being more progressive has been to remove gender based expressions from their signs:
For Example: by replacing “Man” or “Men” with “Persons” or “People” ;
by replacing "Manway" with "Personway" ;
by replacing "Foreman" with "Supervisor".
These are just some of the ways we can help eliminate exclusion, and acknowledge our diversity.
